Hello El Oro Way Charter for Enriched Studies Learning Community,
I hope everyone had a chance to talk to your children about the LA Jazz Society performance this week. Please visit the website or the previous email for details.
An update about STUDENT ATTENDANCE - I am bringing to everyone’s attention that strong attendance correlates strongly with strong academic achievement and success in school. Only 48% of our students are on track to meet the goal of 7 or less absences for the school year. El Oro Way will be recognizing these students with strong attendance in the next couple weeks. Students who have attended every day of school through January 2025 next will be invited to a school wide pizza party. Students who have missed less than 6 days will also be recognized with a certificate. I hope to be able to recognize more students in this group after the end of February. Parents of students with 6 or more absences will be notified to be made aware of the total number of school absences. Please bring all healthy children to school. If your child has a chronic illness under care of a physician, the school nurse and attendance team will work with you to monitor both your child’s health and attendance. Next week, I will introduce the academic recognitions that are coming up.
Reminder also that LAUSD is a cell phone free school district. Students are not to use cell phones during school hours and if they bring them, are to keep them on silent and in backpacks. Thank you to the vast majority of the students and parents for participating and supporting this practice. However, some students are distracting their classmates and teachers by using their cell phones when they access their backpacks at the end of the day. They are keeping their class from dismissing on time by showing videos or texts to classmates rather than following the teachers’ instructions and preparing to leave. Students will receive one warning and after that, the phone will be placed in a pouch that shield the device from cellular service and parents will need to pick up the phone directly from the teacher.
The final volunteer training is scheduled for Friday, February 21 @ 8:15 am in the auditorium. This is a requirement if you would like to volunteer on campus the remainder of the school year. This is the last opportunity to fulfil this requirement.
*Save the Date* Parent Workshop - Thurs, March 6 @ 8:15 am - We are excited to welcome Dr. Stephanie Marcy, PhD, ABPP, from CHLA to share expertise about adolescent mental health and how to recognize and address anxiety in our children. Dr. Marcy is a Licensed Psychologist, Board Certified in Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology; Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics; Keck School of Medicine of USC. You do not want to miss this workshop!
Please join the PTA at Chi’s Chinese for the Restaurant of the Month on Thursday, February 19. The restaurant will donate a portion of sales back to the PTA!
Best,
Ms. Choi, Principal
