Hello El Oro Way Charter for Enriched Studies,
I hope everyone will enjoy the long weekend! Thank you to the El Oro Way PTA for hosting the annual PTA Friendship Breakfast on Thursday! They work to build a school community network and it was great to see the new El Oro Way Families.
Last week, students participated in the Every School Safe Series with the “Start with Hello” video and review of school wide behavior expectations and incentives. We look forward to catching students’ “BEST Behavior” with incentive tickets. A summary of the program was provided in the opening packet for all students.
Many students are still arriving late - please note that the gates close at 8:00am. Students perform best when they enter and begin their school day on time, together with their class. Please support your child’s success to have them arrive on time to start the day with their classmates.
New students (UTK-5th) will bring home a Parent Portal Registration letter. Please follow the instructions to set up your Parent Portal and link your child. Each parent has a separate PIN so that each parent can have their own account. Through the Parent Portal, parents have access to student grades, report cards, standardized testing reports, attendance… Should you have any questions, please reach out to Parent / Community Rep, Mrs. Schiffman, in the front office.
Thank you to all the parents who have already begun to turn in the annual forms back to the office. Please turn in the paperwork by the end of this week.
A new school library aide, Ms. Carradine, started with El Oro Way last week. She is working to bring the library program back to students and all classes will begin weekly visits to the school library in the next few weeks.
The Tech Lab is also preparing to welcome students. Starting September 9th, each class will attend for one session throughout the school year to participate in our coding/robotics program. Kindergarten classes are introduced to coding through Scratch Jr. First grade classes build on their Scratch Jr. and create a four page story. In second grade, students engage with LEGO Wedo 2.0 kits for a hands-on experience. Third grade students use LEGO Spike kits to expand their coding and building skills. Grades four and five move to a different robotics program and use UBTech Beginner and Intermediate kits to further engage in coding and robotics.
We have added an Evening Volunteer Training session. This is a ONE TIME ONLY evening training that will be offered on Thursday, October 17, at 6pm in the school auditorium. The updated flyer is attached and all dates are on the school website. I do ask that all school volunteers attend a training so review the dates and plan to attend. Individual make up sessions will not be scheduled.
Finally, this is a special request to all families - please send your children to school with all the materials they need - snack, lunch, water bottle, homework, jacket, umbrella, etc. We want to minimize disruptions to classrooms so they can have uninterrupted time for instruction. In particular, please do not send external food deliveries to the school. Earlier this week, a GrubHub delivery person pushed past a school employee at the gate, entering the campus to try and deliver food. The delivery person was intercepted and addressed by several other school staff and he made no contact with any child but the event was quite disruptive to school operations. To accommodate the occasional items left behind in the car or home, items for drop off will be accepted in the Main Office until nine am to be taken to classrooms by a designated staff member.
Please enjoy the long weekend, we look forward to seeing everyone back after the Labor Day Holiday.
Respectfully,
Ms. Choi, Principal
