Hello El Oro Way Charter for Enriched Studies Learning Community,
The 5th Grade Culmination Program was held this morning on the school playground and students celebrated the end of their time in elementary school. The students, teachers, and the Fifth Grade Academy Board worked hard to prepare a memorable event. The student performances and favorite memories are always fun to watch.
Tomorrow, the Kindergarten and UTK Students will be holding their celebrations. Teachers have provided the times directly to families and they are also on the school calendar available on the homepage of the school website.
El Oro Way is hosting Summer School 2024 and many students will be attending along with students from all around the valley. LAUSD Beyond the Bell is also providing a childcare program through the KYDS program to supplement summer school. At this time, there is a wait list for summer school at our location. If you are still interested in enrolling, go to the LAUSD summer school website (emailed directly to parents from LAUSD) to look for a different site.
For August 2024, the school bell schedule has been revised to adjust/align to the school drop off times for our feeder schools Kennedy High School (8:30am) and Frost Middle School (8:15am.) State legislation pushed the start times of secondary schools to later in the day and we are now adjusting to not coincide with either of those drop off times. The drop off gate will close at 8:00am for the in-seat learning to begin at 8:05am. Thank you for your cooperation in adjusting to the earlier school days.
YMCA childcare will continue to on site. Both Beyond the Bell (Gr. 2-5) and KYDS (UTK-5) are anticipated to be on site as well.
Next year’s classroom assignments will be available through the Parent Portal on the afternoon of August 9, 2024. Students have been assigned to a grade level teacher as we create classes, adjust for new enrollees and remove those leaving the school. Even after school starts on August 12, 2024, classroom assignments are temporary until LAUSD “Norm Day,” approximately 4 weeks into the school year as adjustments may be necessary for changes in student enrollment. Class size averages are dropping by 1 per class, and so grades 4-5 will be at the average of 31; grades UTK-3 will be at the average of 23; except for the class with the 4 year olds who which will be capped at 20. Thank you to those who reached out with class placement requests but cannot be accepted. Teachers and administrator meet and organize students into new classes for the coming year considering major criteria including academic level, age, bilingual status, special education needs, social/emotional maturity, gifted/talented qualifications, previous retention, and other factors. We devote many hours to the organization process in order to ensure that each student is placed in the appropriate class based upon his/her needs to build high functioning classroom groups. We therefore encourage parents not to make special request for students to be placed in specific classrooms. Please know that we value each student and give every child special consideration.
The 2024/2025 El Oro Way Calendar can also be downloaded at the school website – Parents – Resources. As the school year rolls into the next, the email system can be glitchy – so check the website if you have questions.
I hope everyone will enjoy the summer break!
Best, Ms. Choi
